C.J. Box has created a compelling character in game warden Joe Pickett, who seems destined to star in a series of suspense tales in the wake of ``Open Season'' (G.P. Putnam's Sons; 293 pages; $23.95).
Pickett is a low-key protagonist, a bumbling fella who takes it in stride when he's being laughed at by the citizens of fictitious Twelve Sleep County, Wyoming.
Pickett is hardly a simpleton, though. He's devoted to his family. He has a strong moral compass and an unflinching determination to discover the truth when an outfitter is murdered, no matter how unpleasant the truth may be.
